We accompany you

Appointments with authorities can be stressful, especially when the language is still difficult. Our volunteers are happy to accompany you!

  • Foreigners‘ registration office (Ausländerbehörde): Residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel), extensions
  • Job center (Jobcenter): Applications, official notices (Bescheide), measures
  • Social welfare office (Sozialamt): Benefits, housing benefit (Wohngeld)
  • Doctor’s visits: Translation assistance
  • School registration (Schulanmeldung): For your children

The German administrative system is complex – many people feel this way, not just those who are new here. Here you will find explanations of important documents, addresses, and the opportunity to be accompanied to appointments.

Important documents explained

These documents are particularly important for your life in Germany

Residence permit

Residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel)

The residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis, Niederlassungserlaubnis) shows that you are legally allowed to live in Germany. It is issued by the foreigners‘ registration office (Ausländerbehörde).

Have it extended in good time!

Address

Registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung)

Confirms your residential address. You must register at the residents‘ registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt) within 2 weeks of moving.

Town hall (Rathaus) Lappersdorf

Card

Health insurance card (Krankenversicherungskarte)

With this card, you can go to the doctor. You receive it from your health insurance company (Krankenkasse) when you are insured.

Always take it with you to the doctor!

Work

Work permit (Arbeitserlaubnis)

It is stated in your residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) whether and how much you are allowed to work. If you have any questions, the foreigners‘ registration office (Ausländerbehörde) or the job center (Jobcenter) can help.

Finances

Bank account (Bankkonto)

You need a checking account (Girokonto) for your salary, rent, and social benefits. Sparkassen and Volksbanken offer basic accounts (Basiskonten).

Document

Social security card (Sozialversicherungsausweis)

Contains your social security number (Sozialversicherungsnummer). You need it for every job. You receive it automatically from the pension insurance (Rentenversicherung).

  3. Bring all documents: Passport, residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel), registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung), and all requested documents.
  4. Make copies: Never hand in originals without keeping a copy.
  5. Keep official notices (Bescheide): All letters from authorities are important – keep them safe!
  6. Observe deadlines: Reply to letters within the stated deadline.
